Mauritius recorded 15,604 registrations of new and second-hand imported vehicles during the first six months of 2026. Cars represented the largest category, while Suzuki led the new-vehicle ranking by make, ahead of Toyota and BYD.
Comparing these figures with the same period in 2025 reveals a slower registration market and changes in the balance between brands. Meanwhile, newly published Statistics Mauritius figures show that the island’s overall vehicle fleet continued to expand.
Vehicle Registrations Declined Compared with 2025
Calculations from the monthly registration figures published on MyCar.mu show the following changes:
| Registration category | January–June 2025 | January–June 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| New vehicles, all types | 16,601 | 11,309 | −31.9% |
| Second-hand imported vehicles | 7,466 | 4,295 | −42.5% |
| Combined total | 24,067 | 15,604 | −35.2% |
Second-hand imports experienced the sharper decline. However, the comparison also reflects an unusually high June 2025, when combined registrations reached 6,926. A year-on-year fall alone does not establish why buyers registered fewer vehicles.

Cars Remained the Largest Registration Category
| Vehicle category | New | Second-hand imported | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cars | 4,999 | 3,963 | 8,962 |
| Motorcycles | 3,805 | 7 | 3,812 |
| Autocycles | 765 | 1 | 766 |
| Double cab pickups | 846 | 80 | 926 |
| Lorries and trucks | 463 | 88 | 551 |
| Vans | 180 | 113 | 293 |
Cars accounted for 57.4% of combined registrations. Second-hand imports represented 44.2% of car registrations, retaining a substantial place in this segment. Motorcycles and autocycles together contributed another 4,578 registrations. Percentages are calculated from the published figures.
Suzuki Led, While BYD Moved Ahead
The leading makes in MyCar.mu’s new-vehicle registration table were:
| Rank | Make | January–June 2026 registrations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Suzuki | 1,397 |
| 2 | Toyota | 753 |
| 3 | BYD | 566 |
| 4 | MG | 370 |
| 5 | Kia | 300 |
This table covers the published new-vehicle ranking by make; its total differs from the all-type total, which also includes motorcycles and autocycles.
BYD rose from 261 registrations in the first half of 2025 to 566 in 2026, an increase of 116.9%. Suzuki retained the lead, although its registrations fell from 3,111 to 1,397.
MG’s move into fourth place needs a different interpretation: its registrations decreased from 408 to 370. A higher ranking can therefore reflect other brands declining more sharply, rather than growth in the brand’s own registrations. These comparisons are calculated from the January–June figures.
Mauritius’ Vehicle Fleet Continued to Grow
The latest official report, published by Statistics Mauritius on 28 August 2026, counted 761,531 registered vehicles at the end of June, compared with 746,961 at the end of December 2025. This represents a net increase of 14,570 vehicles, or 2.0%.
Why did the fleet expand while registrations declined compared with 2025? Registrations still added vehicles to the fleet, and those additions exceeded removals.
The official report records 17,727 vehicles joining the fleet: 11,309 new vehicles, 4,295 second-hand imports and 2,123 re-registered vehicles previously taken off the road. Another 3,157 vehicles left circulation. This explains why the official additions total is higher than MyCar.mu’s combined new-and-imported total.
