Before learning to drive a motorcar, motorcycle or autocycle in Mauritius, you must first obtain a provisional driving licence, commonly called a learner’s licence.

The Licensing Office of the Traffic Branch is responsible for issuing and controlling driving licences in Mauritius and Rodrigues. Applications can be made online through the Government of Mauritius using MauPass, at a Post Office or through a Police Station.

How to Apply Online for a Learner’s Licence

1. Visit the Government of Mauritius portal.
2. Open the Digital Government menu and select e-Services.
3. Choose the service to apply for a learner’s licence.
4. Sign in using your MauPass credentials.
5. Complete the application and select a convenient appointment date and time.
6. Attend the Licensing Office with the required original documents to complete the application.

Documents required for the online application

• Birth certificate
• Two recent passport-sized photographs
• Proof of address
• National Identity Card or Student Pass, as applicable
• Marriage certificate, where applicable
• Original passport and valid work or residence permit for non-Mauritian citizens

Bring the original documents when attending the Licensing Office. An applicant aged over 60 may also be required to provide a medical certificate confirming fitness to drive.

Application Through a Police Station

You may also submit an application at the Police Station in your locality using Police Form PF 31. Prepare the following:

• Birth certificate
• National Identity Card or Student Pass, as applicable
• Marriage certificate, where applicable
• Original passport and valid work or residence permit for non-Mauritian citizens
• Email address, telephone number and mobile number

The Police Station forwards the application to the Traffic Branch. If you are eligible, you will be contacted by letter or email and asked to attend the Licensing Office to complete the process.

Taxi, Bus and Lorry Applications

Taxi

An applicant must already hold a competent driving licence for motorcars.

Heavy motor vehicle

An applicant for a bus or lorry licence must have held a competent motorcar driving licence for at least six months.

Taxi and heavy motor vehicle applicants must provide a valid Certificate of Character issued not more than six months earlier.

Replacing a Lost, Damaged or Destroyed Driving Licence

If your licence is lost, report it to the Police Station in your locality. The Police will issue a PF 77 memo, which must be presented when applying for a duplicate at the Licensing Office.

Documents required for a duplicate licence

• Two recent passport-sized photographs
• National Identity Card
• Damaged licence, or PF 77 memo if the licence was lost
• Proof of address
